Abstract

Promotion and relegation is a system utilized to allow teams to move up and down a ladder of connected leagues tied to a specific sport such as soccer leagues within a European nation. Soccer leagues in England, France, Germany, Italy, and Spain are among those that utilize the promotion and relegation system for leagues connected by a ladder within their individual nation's borders. The very top few teams in each league under the top league may be promoted (exact numbers specified by each nation's promotion and relegation system rules while the bottom few teams in each league above the bottom league risk relegation. The financial benefits, media exposure, and other benefits of the top league are substantially greater than those of even the second league, making the cost of promotion to the top league expensive and existence in the top league for newly promoted teams hard to sustain.
