Promotion and Tenure for Academic Librarians: Current Practices at Selected Institutions

Research output: Contribution to book or proceedingChapter

Abstract

Chapter Excerpt: In the summer and fall of 1998, a colleague and I conducted a survey of academic libraries at institutions that are classified by the Carnegie Foundation as Research I or II, Doctoral I or II, or Master's (formerly Comprehensive) I or II. The purpose was to seek the most recent success rates of librarians in earning tenure, in order to determine whether a persistent concern was justified: that librarians with faculty status who are expected to conduct scholarly research may be substantially less likely to meet tenure requirements than other faculty.
