Abstract
Although Rickettsia rickettsii is the most pathogenic member of the genus Rickettsia and a U.S. category B Select Agent, it is often excluded from lists of potential bioweapon agents. We briefly review the taxonomy and properties of R. rickettsii and the disease it causes, Rocky Mountain spotted fever, its transmission and epidemiology, diagnosis and treatment, and the challenges it poses for prevention and control.
