Abstract
Experiential learning encompasses a wide range of course designs that expand beyond traditional classroom experiences. Service-learning is one type of experiential course design used to increase student engagement. Service-learning advances lecture-based instruction and internships and helps fill the gaps mentioned by industry professionals that graduating students lack experiences of resource management and professional communication. Further, service-learning techniques are beneficial as feedback has shown: to increase knowledge retention and student engagement; to enable students to practice professional communication and teamwork; and to increase professional readiness and confidence for entry-level professionals. Service-learning programs create opportunities for students to apply theories they learned in the classroom to real-world situations. From the efforts of service-learning, students can have first-hand experiences in understanding the way society impacts various sport settings. Finding alternative ways to interact and engage students, such as with service-learning courses, will be mutually beneficial for future employers, community partners, and students.
