Abstract

In this study, there are two loadcells used at the bottom of the legs of a pressure vessel. Being in an open environment, the pressure vessels are subjected to weather conditions that may increase external forces on the structures. When the wind speed is high enough, there is an increase in load transferred through the load cells, causing an impact loading to the load cells. In this research, a completely fractured and a partially fractured loadcell were analyzed for the possibility of fracture due to impact loads. Through surface imaging, the curved fractured surfaces, as well as the many small indentations on the contact point on the load cells, indicated failure over time, rather than from one single impact load. In addition to this, Finite Element Analysis was used to simulate the impact loads from the dropping of the leg onto the loadcell. These simulations revealed failure for the loadcell in two of the four cases simulated. From this research, the possibility of the fracturing of a loadcell due to a single impact load has been confirmed through finite element analysis. However, the results from the surface imaging demonstrated the likelihood of this failure resulting from multiple impact loads.
