Abstract
Two complexes which are great starting materials for synthesizing other complexes are the carbonate complexes [Co(NH3)4CO3]+ and [Co(NH3)5CO3]+. Treatment with acids removes the complexed carbonate ligand and opens coordination sites on the metal ion. The research focuses on the use of various dicarboxylic acids, such as oxalic acid, malonic acid, and succinic acid, to lead to novel structures with cyclic ligands, free carboxylic acid components, and the potential of attaching two cobalt groups, making bimetallic products. The synthesis and characterization of several of these complexes using NMR, IR and UV-Vis spectroscopy is reported.
