Abstract

Presented at the National College Learning Center Association Annual Conference, Louisville, KY.

This session will share results from a qualitative study focused on students' perceptions of effective instructional practices in college-success courses. Using practice-based methodology, a team of current and former college success instructors analyzed undergraduate students’ open-ended responses on an anonymous end-of semester evaluation. The findings highlighted how instructional features, intellectual experiences, and teaching practices supported students’ autonomy, competence, and relatedness. This session will describe the underlying theoretical framework for the study, share 10 themes that can be used to guide effective college-success instruction, and engage participants in reflection and discussion of their own teaching practices and goals.
