The Art of Weeding: Getting Support From Faculty on Print Collection Weeding Projects

Research output: Contribution to conferencePresentation

Abstract

Collection weeding is an important task for libraries in order to sustain a healthy collection. However, discarding books is also a very challenging task because it is a sensitive issue in many societies, including in Hong Kong, as many communities do not like libraries discarding books. In this presentation, Mr. Lau will discuss his experience with the collection weeding and relocation projects in Hong Kong and the U.S. Mr. Lau was the Associate Librarian for Technical and Collection Services Division at the Hong Kong Baptist University Library for 27 months before he returned to the U.S. in March 2016. He will compare his recent experience in Hong Kong with his previous experience in Baltimore and conclude with lessons he learned from managing these projects with a focus on gaining faculty support for the projects.
