The Innovation Studio: A MakerSpace for higher education

Research output: Contribution to conferencePresentation

Abstract

Makerspaces sprout in formal and informal learning environments as a community of innovative design, development, and practice. Georgia Southern University’s College of Education is opening its own MakerSpace entitled, The Innovation Studio. The Innovation Studio will bring teachers, students, and community members together to engender the maker spirit and generate innovative solutions to their unique problems at schools and workplaces. In conjunction with the College’s effort to prepare students to lead in a technology-rich environment, The Innovation Studio will provide access to cutting-edge technologies such as 3D printing, robotics, electronics, augmented reality, games, and other smart technologies so its users can generate solutions using these technologies. Moreover, it will offer formal and informal programs for interdisciplinary and hands-on learning such as workshops for teachers, summer camps for kids, formal courses for students, and informal maker sessions for community members. At the exhibition at the Design, Development, and Research Conference, the co-founders of the Innovation Studio hope to introduce the emergence of the Innovation Studio, its goals and missions, learning activities, and technologies. We also hope to share our research agenda and exchange ideas with others of similar interest and expertise.
