Abstract
Rickettsia prowazekii has been weaponized and is well known for its explosive epidemic potential in populations infested with body lice. The taxonomy, disease, biological warfare history and weaponizaton, and properties of the organism are briefly reviewed. Finally, aspects of the transmission and epidemiology of epidemic typhus, its diagnosis and treatment, and prevention and control are discussed relative to both the natural history disease context and to the nefarious use of R. prowazekii as a bioweapon agent.
