Abstract

The U.S. Senate race in Georgia tests whether Democratic gains in 2020 were an outlier or the start of a political realignment in a rapidly changing Southern state. Joe Biden was the first Democratic presidential candidate to carry the state in 28 years and, just two months later, Raphael Warnock and Jon Ossoff flipped two longtime Republican Senate seats, handing Democrats a narrow majority in the Senate. Republicans are looking to regain control of the Senate, and this requires a victory in Georgia. This chapter analyzes the 2022 senatorial election in Georgia between Herschel Walker (Rep.) and the incumbent Raphael Warnock (Dem.), and offers insights for partisan development in Georgia and elsewhere in the South, as well as offers prospects for the Democrat's ability to hold on to the White House in 2022.
