Abstract

Summary form only given. Although the refractive index is an important atomic property, few accurate index measurements for inert gases in the VUV region above the first allowed transition have been made. The authors describe the first measurement of the refractive index of Xe gas in the negatively dispersive region from 115 to 117 nm. The refractive index was measured by determining the phase-matching condition for four-wave sum mixing in Xe-Ar gas mixtures. Both experiment and theory are consistent over a range in refractive index of more than 2 orders of magnitude. 3 refs.
