Abstract

Georgia S. Univ. Competes in the Formula SAE Collegiate Competition Annually. Competition Rules Require Students to Des. and Fabricate A Formula Style Open Wheeled Racecar. the Driving Surf. at These Events Is Often Comprised of Minute Sized Inconsistencies Including Bumps, Cracks, and Potholes That Can Adversely Affect the Perf. of the Vehicle. One of the Most Important Factors of A High Performing Vehicle Is Having A Well Tuned Suspension for A Given Driving Surf.. This Paper Investigates the Vibrational Response from the Vehicle's Dampers from Irregularities in the Rd. while Navigating A Straight Line Course Using Compl. Simulat.. Adams/Car Software Is Utilized to Perform Full Vehicle Dynamic Simulations of the Car Encountering Various Rd. Case Conditions. Damping Curves Provided by the Manufacturer Were Evaluated Using A Simplified Quarter Car Model to Predict the Most Appropriate Setting for the Damper, Then Were Compared to Data Produced from Adams/Car Simulations. the Adams/Car Model Was Validated Using Data Collected from the Phys. Car's on Bd. Data Acq. Syst.. Settle Time for the Damper Shaft to Return to Its Initial Steady State Position, Oscillations, and Amplitude of the Shaft's Displacement after Excitation Was Analyzed to Determine the Optimal Damper Setting.
