Abstract
Since the mid-1990s, phosphors have played a key role in the emerging solid state lighting field. This paper presents a brief review on several key aspects, involving the evaluation criterion of general illumination quantify, the basic knowledge of luminescence physics in phosphors, and the approaches to design phosphor-converted white LED (light-emitting diodes). Further understanding of these key aspects will certainly promote the research and development of white LED illumination.
