Abstract
Ytterbium and copper co-doped phosphate glass containing plasmonic Cu particles showing dichroism was synthesized and the impact on Yb3+ near-infrared (NIR) emission evaluated. While the co-doped precursor glass exhibited ultraviolet to NIR luminescence down-shifting owing to copper(I), the dichroic glass displayed an enhanced NIR emission which is reported herein for the first time. It was found most favorable for Cu+ excitation around 360 nm. Scattering by Cu particles is suggested to produce the emission boost attractive for solar cell applications.
